About the Journal
The University of Queensland Law Journal (Print ISSN 0083-4041, Online ISSN 1839-289X) is owned and published by the TC Beirne School of Law, The University of Queensland. It is one of Australia's premier law periodicals. Established in 1948, it is arguably the oldest university law journal in Australia.
Submissions can be made online here.
Aims and Scope
The Journal publishes significant works of scholarship that make an original contribution to different fields of law, with an emphasis on issues relevant to an Australian legal audience. This includes all areas of domestic, international and comparative law, as well as jurisprudence, legal history and the intersection of law with other disciplines. In addition to general issues, the Journal occasionally publishes special issues dedicated to a particular legal theme or topic.
The Journal publishes articles, case notes and book reviews, as well several distinguished lectures. It also publishes comments on issues of interest to the Journal's readership, including recent developments in the law or scholarship, that are not suited to standard article, case note or book review formats.
Open Access
The University of Queensland Law Journal is an open access journal. Articles from 1948 onwards are archived and available electronically on Austlii. Articles from 2019 onwards (including forthcoming articles) are available here.
Editors
The Journal is edited by members of academic staff in the TC Beirne School of Law. The current editors are:
- Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh (Chief Editor)
- Dr Wenting Cheng
- Dr Renato Saeger Magalhaes Costa
- Dr Andrew Fell
The editors also rely on the advice and assistance of an editorial board consisting of members of academic staff within the School.
Review Process
The Journal strives to provide an anonymous, fair, independent, expert and robust approach to the review of all submitted articles.
All submissions are subject to an initial editorial or ‘desk' review by one or more of the Journal’s editors. If necessary and appropriate, this desk review will occur in consultation (on an anonymised basis) with other academic staff with relevant subject-matter expertise within the UQ School of Law.
Following a positive decision at the desk review stage, all submissions will be subject to double-blind peer review (that is, neither the author nor reviewers are aware of the other’s identity) by at least two expert referees. Case notes, book reviews and comments are typically sent to one referee, although in some instances blind peer review may not be possible.
A decision on publication is taken by the editors on the basis of the referees’ reports. Authors may be asked to revise and resubmit a submission, and resubmissions will typically be sent to referees for review before a decision on publication is made.
We aim to complete the review process, from submission of the article to a publication decision, within 12 weeks.
Please note that the Journal does not generally publish more than one article from any author in a single year.
Publishing Schedule
The Journal publishes three issues a year, in April, August and December. All content is nevertheless assigned a DOI and published on the Journal’s website as soon as it has been accepted for publication and has passed our editing process.
Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. There is no specific deadline for submission.
Author Fees
The Journal does not accept or require fees from authors for publication or manuscript processing.
